This bold, cubist-inflected acrylic work centers the unshakable, unapologetic visibility of intergenerational Black community, rendered in crisp black linework and flat, vivid blocks of cobalt, tangerine, emerald, deep umber, soft gray, and rose. Dozens of faces — elders with graying hair, young people with sharp fades and natural curls, community members across every age and identity — tile tightly across the canvas, with no single “star” figure elevated above the rest.
Each face is split across geometric color planes, rejecting flat, monolithic stereotypes of Black identity by honoring the many overlapping facets, histories, and quiet truths held by every single person. Every pair of eyes holds a steady, unflinching direct gaze out to meet the viewer: no glance is turned away, no expression is performed for an outside audience, even the partial faces cropped at the canvas edges hold space as a quiet nod to ancestors who came before and future generations still to come. Packed close, sharing edges with no one left isolated, the figures form one connected whole: a portrait of collective witness, mutual care, and a community that shows up fully, for itself.
